Soul Trainis making its way to Broadway.
According to Deadline, a musical based on the iconic music variety series that ran from 1971 to 2006 is being made for Broadway. Questlove is slated to executive produce the show alongside Tony, Don Cornelius' son (Cornelius hosted and created Soul Train). The show will also include a creative team that includes playwright Dominique Morisseau, director Kamilah Forbes, and choreographer Camille A. Brown.
The musical will feature more than 20 hit songs from the era while telling the personal story of Cornelius as he creates the television series.
"With many years of experience working directly with my father, I'm forever grateful and deeply humbled by the impact Soul Train has had on the culture at large both here and abroad," Tony Cornelius told Deadline. "For 37 years, and with purpose, through music, dance and style, Soul Train brought Love, Peace & Soul to a national audience."
The musical will hit Broadway in 2021 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Soul Train's premiere.
Earlier this year, BET debuted its Soul Train-inspired TV series titled American Soul. The series chronicles Cornelius' entrepreneurial rise, his Soul Train dancers, crew, and the musicians at the helm of the program’s rise in 1970s Hollywood, and how it defined and documented black culture in America.
The series was renewed for a second season in April 2019.
