A Stan Lee Documentary Is Coming to Disney+ In 2023
On Wednesday, Disney+ announced that a documentary on Marvel Comics head Stan Lee is arriving to the streamer next year.
Disney+ is bringing a tribute to Marvel Comics lead Stan Lee to the streaming platform in 2023. On Wednesday (December 28) – what would have marked Lee's 100th birthday – Disney+ announced that an original documentary on the famed comic book legend would arrive next year. A 25-second montage clip posted to Twitter shows Lee's work within the industry before the visual pans out to a cartoon illustration of the creator.
The film will come four years after Lee's death, as he passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, one month shy of his 96th birthday in 2018. At his time of death, Lee was suffering with a bout of pneumonia.
“Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement following his death. “A superhero in his own right to Marvel fans around the world, Stan had the power to inspire, to entertain and to connect. The scale of his imagination was only exceeded by the size of his heart.”
A writer and editor for Marvel Comics, which formerly known as Timely Comics, Lee's career began in 1941 when he was 17, publishing an introductory prose story that appeared in the fifth issue of Captain America Comics. In the 1960s, Lee's work became popularized as Marvel Comics' editor-in-chief, collaborating with artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.
As co-creator of Spider-Man, The Avengers, X-Men, Hulk, The Fantastic Four and other Marvel superheroes, Lee also made cameos in blockbuster Marvel films. Lee's last cameo in the MCU was his posthumous feature in Avengers: Endgame, where he was also digitally re-digitized. In all, Lee has been in 37 Marvel films.
