Talib Kweli Checks Rick Ross Over Rape Lyrics

Talib Kweli took time during a recent discussion with HuffPost Live to address controversial statements made by Rick Ross during a verse on Rocky's "U.O.E.N.O." song. The Miami rapper makes reference to drugging and raping a woman with the following line:

"Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it"

The lyrics dropped to a wave of opposition across mainstream and social media outlets, with most detractors calling for Ross to offer an explanation and/or apology. His dismissive response to the outcry suggested that the uproar surrounding his statements was the overblown result of a misunderstanding. An excuse Kweli refuses to accept. He addresses his feelings about the overall lack of responsibility that pervades in the lyrics of some rappers, including Lil Wayne who recently offered a shockingly derogatory statement about the Jim Crow era death of Emmett Till - a statement made more insulting by the stylistic choice to utilize the reference to address his own sexual prowess. Aside from calling fellow rappers to task Kweli took some time to discuss the lack of fairness and love the media applies to these artists and the overall issue of artistic freedom. Take a look.
