Talib Kweli x Combat Jack On The Early Years of Okayplayer + More [Pt. 3]
August 02, 2013
Talib Kweliwraps up his interview withThe Combat Jack Showby having a great discussion on what makes "true hip-hop." The talk starts off with Talib discussing his history with the internet. He breaks down his early experiences on OKP, specifically when he tried to fight a leak ofBeautiful Struggle. He then details how he came to appreciate the online fan community--which was not what you'd call a love-at-first-site-situation, as he explains in this quote about (cough) a certain community that always got something to say:
"I knew I had fans on the Internet that supported me, particularly places like Okayplayer, but I never went on no comment section. I never went on a blog, I never went on a chatroom," Kweli explains. "Okayplayer was what got me into the Internet. I started going on Okayplayer because I liked the idea of a community of artists."
Kweli also touches on how he deals with backlash when collaborating with unexpected rappers. It's a fascinating conversion for any hip hop fan. Check out parts 1 and 2 and peep the final clip below.
