Tall Black Guy, Mr. Thing, Eric Lau & kidkanevil Connect For A Brand New Beat Record Ahead Of Record Store Day 2015
As the music community prepares for April 18th, aka Record Store Day, beatsmith Tall Black Guy has linked up with a slew of excellent producers and brought forth Thing Leaves The House. A collaboration between TBG, Eric Lau, kidkanevil and UK disc jockey legend Mr. Thing, Thing Leaves The House came together via an old-school crate digging session.
Listeners with exceptionally good memory banks will recall that for last year's record store day First World Recordsrolled out a compilation album of beats featuring TBG, Lau, and kidkanevil. Those tracks were constructed from records hand-selected by Mr. Thing, and now in 2015 the entire crew is back, but with a script that's been slightly flipped. Tall Black Guy and co. have all crafted brand new beats sourced from records in Mr. Thing's collection, but the trio also turned the tables on Thing and demanded he make his own beat with the vinyl of their choosing. Thing Leaves The House is the product of their friendly composer combat; when beatmakers compete, we all win. "The result is 4 tracks that truly capture the personalities of each producer," First World boasts, "and a record that is born out of a heartfelt love of records - we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it."
From the grimy bounce of Tall Black Guy's "Solar Coaster For The People" to the airy Sergio Mendes bossa nova sample of Mr. Thing's "Carnival" (complete with a nod to Dilla), the Thing Leaves The House compilation should be on every hip-hop head's RSD wishlist--here's hoping you find a copy.
