With police brutality appearing on more screens than ever and a presidential candidate whose platform is largely based on racism and xenophobia, hip-hop has begun to step up to the plate with music that describes the times. On their new song "Black Woman Is God," The Black Opera shows that they have something to say.
The once anonymous duo of Jamall Bufford and Magestik Legend team up over an ominous, bubbling backdrop (produced by Magestik Legend himself) to ruminate over formative black history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dreams of equality, over what they describe as a current-day "black man hell."
To accompany the song, The Black Opera released a statement:
"With more questions than answers, [we] may not solve the case, but with everything happening to Black people in America, [we] hope to bring attention to the injustice by approaching it from a different angle. The fact that there are theories based in scientific truth that the Black Woman Is God should let us know that people of color deserve much more respect and honor. As the debate continues, so does the need for change in the police/Black American dynamic and how the repercussions (or lack thereof) are being handed out after acts of violence."
"Black Woman Is God" is the lead single from The Black Opera's upcoming album African America, which is scheduled for a Nov. 11 release. The record is the full-length follow-up to their 2014 album, The Great Year.
