The first official trailer for the upcoming The Little Mermaidmovie is here.
The trailer made its debut just moments after being previewed at the 95th Academy Awards. The trailer features the first extended look at the live action remake of the 1989 classic.
The movie stars Halle Bailey, who is playing the lead, Ariel. The movie, which was directed by veteran filmmaker Rob Marshall, also features Melissa McCarthy as Ursula; Javier Bardem as King Triton; Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina; and voice work from Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), and Awkwafina (Scuttle.)
The soundtrack was created by Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda who is collaborating with Alan Menken, who wrote the score for the original.
The movie comes out on May 26th. And for star Bailey it's been a long journey. She started her career as part of the Grammy-nominated R&B duo Chloe x Halle and then went on to appear in acting roles in A Wrinkle in Time, Grown-ish, and Last Holiday.
Bailey was first announced as the lead back in 2019. Since then, there has been controversy around the pick, mostly from those upset at the idea that Ariel is no longer white.
In an interview with Variety, Bailey talked about the importance of playing the role, saying:
“I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they’re special, and that they should be a princess in every single way... There’s no reason that they shouldn’t be. That reassurance was something that I needed.”
