Check Out This Massive Sculpture of The Notorious B.I.G. Near the Brooklyn Bridge
A new nine foot sculpture of The Notorious B.I.G. called "Sky's the Limit in the County of Kings" has been erected near the Brooklyn Bridge.
The Notorious B.I.G. is synonymous with New York City. Whether it’s a historical celebration or a metro card, his legacy is embedded inside of Brooklyn’s DNA. And now, he’s immortalized as a statue.
A new nine foot art installation called "Sky's the Limit in the County of Kings" has been erected near the Brooklyn Bridge (at the northeast corner of Prospect Street and Washington Street). The statue is gorgeous, featuring Biggie wearing a crown and Coogi sweater. He's gazing at the city like he owns it.
The statue was designed by NYC artist Sherwin Banfield and it was constructed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, which is next year.
The sustainable and interactive statue is carefully curated with Bronze, Resin, Stainless Steel, Winterstone, and Wood. And to ensure you don’t miss it, a special DJ mix is played featuring Biggie’s hits. (There is a built in audio system powered by a solar energy.)
Banfield talked to Artnet news about the statue. He said:
“I wanted to take something classic then remix or sample it with something new and fresh.”
The statue was made in collaboration between the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and The Downtown Brooklyn + Dumbo Art Fund. According to Banfield, he had previously sketched out a design for a monument dedicated to Biggie and jumped at this opportunity after his cousin told him about it.
“The location had a profound impact on the work... It’s on a hill, and I wanted viewers to ascend towards a regal monument and be welcomed with open arms and two essential human qualities: the voice through a microphone and love via a heart.”
The statue will remain on display until Spring 2023.
