Watch the First Trailer for 'The Penguin' TV Series
The Penguin will act as a bridge to Matt Reeves' The Batman and the movie's sequel.
The Batman universe is expanding. On Wednesday, HBO released the first teaser trailer for The Penguin, the spinoff show from Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
The show, which will star Colin Farrell as the Penguin, will focus on the villain's status in Gotham after the events of The Batman.
In that movie, Penguin was the underboss of Carmine Falcone (who was played by John Turturro). Falcone — spoiler alert — ends up dying in the movie. So the show will feature Penguin trying to fill his spot. The Batman sequel has already been confirmed, and, at the top of the year, Reeves talked about the show being connected to the upcoming sequel.
“There's actually a whole little fabric of things we're wanting to do, the way we're doing with [the]Penguin and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be.”
Farrell also talked about the show to Collider, saying:
"I read the first episode, which is just so tasty and so unusual as the character was on the page and what Matt Reeves kind of envisioned when he was thinking of this iteration of the bang up of Oz."
A couple of months ago, co-chief of DC James Gunn talked about the future of the DC universe. Gunn announced there will be two sections of the DCEU, with one being the "Elseworlds," which will feature contained stories and plot lines. The Penguin and The Batman sequel will exist in the "Elseworlds" world. (The Joker: Folie à Deux will also appear in "Elseworlds," despite the fact it's not related to The Batman.)
