The Robert Glasper Trio & Dres (Black Sheep) — 'Just Cause'
Black Sheep's Dres has dropped some songs on his SoundCloud page throughout 2016, and his latest one features him hopping on The Robert Glasper Trio's "Just Cause."
Why "Just Cause"...? Well, the rapper explains in the song's description: "Just Cause I'm a huge fan of Robert Glasper's work... Just Cause his live version of The Worst is just an insanely dope piece of work... Just Cause I play it all the damn time... Just Cause I thought it would be really cool to put a beat under it and rhyme on it... Just Cause I thought everyone would appreciate the sentiment... I present... Just Cause."
The track will have you wondering why The Robert Glasper Trio and Dres haven't worked with each other yet, but maybe this will lead to a collaboration between the two in the near future. Glasper has been busy this year: he recently released his Miles Davis tribute album, Everything's Beautiful (which includes guest appearances from Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, 9th Wonder, Bilal, Hiatus Kaiyote and Phonte); he's featured on Terrace Martin's Velvet Portraits album; and he's getting ready to teach a class on Miles Davis at New York University in the fall.
"Miles is a total poster child of what jazz is supposed to be, because a lot of jazz purists feel like jazz sounds a certain way," Glasper talked to us about in a recent interview. "This is jazz. Now that’s not jazz. This is jazz. Then when you ask jazz purists another question, 'Who’s your favorite jazz musician,' they will probably say Miles Davis."
"Miles made it okay to say, 'Fuck you,' but still be honest and still honored the music. Some people say, 'Fuck you,' to jazz, but they couldn’t play jazz from the very beginning. You were never really good. That’s why you’re so-called pushing the envelope, because you really couldn’t play this shit to begin with."
