Throwback Thursday: That Time Thundercat Played Dilla's Flip Of Herbie Hancock On Slum Village's "Get Dis Money"--For Herbie Hancock

Just in time for Dilla Day, we get this little anecdote about how his musical legacy continues to connect genius music across generational lines. If you ever get the chance to show a musician of Herbie Hancock's caliber how J Dillaput the flip on one of his tunes, you should probably go ahead and do so. That's precisely what we learned from a candid clip we received from the homie Sama'an Ashrawi, who managed to record the hilarious tale of how Thundercat & Flying Lotus made the Great Headhunter sit and listen to Jay Dee's flip of his own '78 cut "Come Running To Me" on Slum Village's classic "Get Dis Money."

While we're all more than familiar with Fantastic Vol. 2 vibe-out joint, Hancock found himself hearing it for the first time while in session with 'Cat and FlyLo recording his contribution to You're Dead!. This is one of those geek-out moments of the century for anyone even remotely tapped into the lineage of Dilla's sample selection and should provide Brainfeeder loyalists with the same sort of glee, as the creative kin chop it up with a legend and bring the love-fest full circle. Below you can watch the clip -- recorded from his Eddie Murphy-pillow-furnished couch -- of Thundercat telling the tale and gushing the whole way through as only a true music head can. Quote of the day: "So we were having the J Dilla talk--as you would." Oh, and speaking of the SV crew, jump over and put your ear to their cerebral new cut  "E(I)GO".
