Thundercat Delivers A Sparse Take On "Oh Sheit, It's X!" For Black Cab Sessions
Stuffed into the back of a moving cab with his 6 string hollowbody bass and 10 gallon hat, Thundercat delivered an artful, scaled-back rendition of his 2013 single "Oh Sheit, It's X" for Black Cab Sessions. "Oh Sheit," is, of course, a hard-stepping party song built of hard drums and double-layered bass parts, but the cat's solo performance suffered from no lack of power, becoming instead a tender ballad--albeit a goofy one at that. This is, after all, still that brilliant verse that finishes with "Oh, shit, I'm fucked up!"
Thundercat is in the midst of prepping a new EP, rumored to be dropping later in the year, but has already logged put in a massive array of work that includes numerous features on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly LP and, of course, Flying Lotus's jazz-hip-hop-voodoo-fusion masterful You're Dead! Stil, for all his great guest work its his own compositions that suit him best, and as the virtuoso strums through each delicate "Of Sheit" chord it's not hard to imagine the man woodshedding back at home, logging hours and hours of exploration on his instrument--so many that he forgets to change his socks.
