Top 7 Vinyl Releases For Record Store Day
Goddamn it's like, 4/20, Bob Marley Day and Record Store Day all at once around here. Technically, Record Store Day is tomorrow (UPDATE: Now today!) but in terms of promotion it is raining musical cats and dogs around here. It can get a little overwhelming so--although I won't attempt to be as comprehensive as Shamz'Stoner Post--I thought it would be worth selecting a few of the most noteworthy vinyl releases, of particular interest to the OKP reader. Cue 'em up in no particular order...except outer groove to inner:
1. Shabazz Palaces, Live At KEXP 12".
Pretty much what it sounds like: live SP performance from the studios of Seattle's KEXP radio station, with amazing artwork.
2. CSC Funk Band, "A Little Weight" (Gang Starr Tribute) b/w "A Little Planet."
We premiered it (so to speak), so you know we feel it. A tough band in deep concentration.
3. V/A, Never to Be Forgotten: The Flip Side of Stax 1968-74
A ten-disc box set of 7"s covering Rufus Thomas, Melvin Van Peebles and other less-celebrated Stax sides from the good people at Light In The Attic.
4. Deerhoof / Of Montreal split 7"
Seems only right to include this one, since I am blogging live from the green room of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where Deerhoof have been tearing it up as part of Questlove's Shuffle Culture happening/ensemble/festival. If you are into the indie-rock side of things, there is a more comprehensive list (Top 45) of such-like at PF.
5. Lee "Scratch" Perry Blackboard Jungle Dub Box Set
From the notes: Lee "Scratch" Perry's Blackboard Jungle Dub issued for the first time ever in a 10" vinyl pressing. The triple vinyl is in red, green and gold and housed in a full color box hinged box secured with a magnetic clasp. Also included is a 30" x 30" poster of the cover art. While you're up, get a Lee "Scratch" action figure.
6. Zara Macfarlane, "More Than Mine" b/w "Lions of Chiaroscuro"
Another mind-blower from Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label, come for the A-side, stay for the mash up of Zara's "Chiarascuro" with "Lions of Judah."
7. The Pharcyde, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde: The Singles Collection.
A Delicious Vinyl box set of seven 7" singles on different colored vinyl...also includes two CDs, a puzzle, and a poster.
Honorable Mentions.
Sometime Roots (and now Major Lazer) collaborators Dirty Projectors just leaked this youtube of their Record Store Day release "You Against The World." LargeUp is running a contest offering you a chance to win a limited edition "Reggae Dubb'n Again" 12" from Busy Signal (I want that sh*t!) and Oh No! don't forget Gangrene.
