Trayvon Martin Will Receive a Posthumous Bachelors Degree From Florida Memorial University
Trayvon Martin wanted to be a pilot. So much so, that Martin took pilot classes in high school.
However, he was never given that opportunity. And now a university is trying to honor those dreams posthumously.
Five years after Martin was fatally shot — a killing that sparked a new era of black activism — Florida Memorial University will honor him with a posthumous bachelor’s degree in aeronautical science, with a concentration in flight education.
Martin's parents Sybrina Fulton, who is a graduate of the university, and Tracy Martinwill accept the degree on behalf of their son, who would have been 22 if he would have been alive. The commencement ceremony will happen on Saturday, May 13th.
The school announced the news on their Facebook page:
Sybrina took to Twitter to thank the university:
On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was coming home from the store when he was profiled and killed by a neighborhood watch captain. A movement was sparked when that neighborhood watch captain was acquitted of second-degree murder in 2013.
