The Universal Hip-Hop Museum is Coming to The Bronx in 2023
"As time winds down on a lot of our careers, we think that it’s an important plea that our legacies and our histories can be in one place for the whole world to see."
Following several abandoned plans and models, The Universal Hip-Hop Museum finally has a home.
According to Gothamist, the Kurtis Blow-fronted proposal will break ground at 65 E. 149th St. in South Bronx later this year. The museum will occupy the first two floors of the upcoming mixed-use housing development, Bronx Point, where 600 of the 1,045 units will be affordable housing units.
Blow, who serves as the museum's chairman, revealed his vision of an interactive experience -- studded by VR and spaces for graffiti and music creation -- in a recent interview with Pix 11 (see below.) Per a Forbesinterview, the museum will house crucial artifact donated to by musicians, including, but not limited to, Tupac's handwritten lyrics and Blow's gold plaque for "The Breaks" (the first single to go gold from a rapper.) Blow also notes that the museum has secured $20 million in funding, but will need an additional $60 million for completion. Should it hit the mark, the museum will open in 2023, just in time for hip-hop's 50th-anniversary festivities.
