"We Created a Classic": 88-Keys and Talib Kweli Detail Black Star Sessions, Recall Pre-Fame Kanye Moments
Watch 88 and Kweli recount the night they cut "Thieves In The Night."
88-Keys is the latest guest on Talib Kweli's People's Partypodcast.
Ahead of Monday's full drop, a pair of previews have been released. In one clip, the producer chronicles his relationship with Kanye, which dates back to the mid-90s, when the rapper had relocated to Newark to build a career with Roc-A-Fella and its affiliated artists. After noting an unflinching confidence that was present even then, 88 details how he and West developed an early kinship in transit to and from the studio as young producers.

In another clip, 88 discusses his specific approach to production. After breaking down the difference between chopping and looping a sample, the producer pivots to his work with Kweli and Yasiin Bey (then, Mos Def,) on the Black Star song "Thieves in The Night," piecing together a session that began with a cab ride from Brooklyn to Long Island and ended with the trio making a classic in the basement of 88's parent's home.
