The Iconic 'Fresh Prince' Theme Gets a Dark Recalibration in The First 'Bel-Air' Teaser
Peacock packs their first teaser for Bel-Air with callbacks to the original series.
Though it's yet to get a firm release date, we're finally getting a good look at Peacock's incoming reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Today the network shared an eery teaser for their recalibration of the iconic 90s sitcom and it appears they're really leaning into the whole "dramatic retelling" thing. The brief Bel Air teaser formally introduces Jabari Banks as the new Will, features a dark take on the show's iconic theme song (read by Will Smith, according to a press release,) and plenty of callbacks to the original series.
The teaser arrives just a few months after the network announced they'd found their leading man in Banks, which was revealed in a clip of Smith breaking the news to the young actor. Based on a viral spec trailer created by director Morgan Cooper (who is serving as director, co-writer, and executive producer, on the project,) Bel-Air has already been picked up for two seasons on Peacock. However, the network has yet to reveal precisely when we can expect the series to debut. Plot details are still few and far between, but Cooper has offered a few clues as to what fans can expect. "With this dramatic reimagining, we wanted to create a show that stands on its own while honoring the spirit and innovation of the original series, Cooper says in a press release. "Because Bel-Air is a drama, we're able to really peel back the layers of these characters and themes in a way that you simply couldn't do 30 years ago in the half-hour sitcom format. We're able to go have tough conversations that challenge perspectives. At its core, Bel-Air is a celebration of the black experience through the perspective of a family.
