Watch The Trailer for Regina King's Directorial Debut 'One Night in Miami'
One Night in Miami centers on a meeting between Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown, in 1964.
After sweeping the award show circuit with her on-screen performances in 2019 and 2020, Regina King is stepping behind the camera for her next run.
Today, Amazon Prime shared the trailer for One Night In Miami, King's feature-length directorial debut, centering on a pivotal night in the lives of Cassius Clay (soon to be Muhammad Ali,) Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown, who meet in a hotel room in Miami to celebrate Clay's upset victory over Sonny Liston in their first of two career bouts. One Night in Miami is (very loosely) based on real events and adapted from Kemp Powers' 2013 play of the same name. Though it's a fictional account of the evening, a press release for the film claims it's a story that "looks at the struggles these men faced and the vital role they each played in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the Sixties." One Night In Miami features Eli Goree as Clay, Leslie Odom, Jr. as Cooke, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, and Aldis Hodge as Brown. Powers wrote the treatment for this adaptation of his play.
For King, it arrives as a logical next step from a breakout year, taking home an Oscar in 2019 for Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street CouldTalk and an Emmy in 2020 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for HBO's Watchmen. King previously directed nearly two dozen episodes of series for television, including several installments of Being Mary Jane and Scandal, as well as one-offs of This Is Us, Shameless, and most recently, Insecure.
One Night in Miami will screen in limited theaters on December 25th before premiering on Amazon Prime Video on January 15th. Watch the trailer below.
