Golden Globes 2019: 'Green Book' Beats 'If Beale Street Could Talk,' 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Gets Best Drama Film & More
This year's Golden Globes prize list was underwhelming.
The 2019 Golden Globe Awards took place this Sunday night and although there were some notable wins — Regina King receiving Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk or Sandra Oh receiving Best Actress in a TV Series for Killing Eve — some of the night's biggest wins were surprising.
Green Book, the comedy-drama that follows classical jazz pianist Don Shirley (portrayed by Mahershala Ali) and his bodyguard Tony Vallelonga (portrayed by Viggo Mortensen) as they travel through the Deep South in the 1960s, won over Barry Jenkins' If Beale Street Could Talk for Best Screenplay.
The former film received some criticism from some of Shirley's family. Maurice Shirley, Don's brother, said that Don "never considered Tony to be his 'friend'; he was an employee, his chauffeur (who resented wearing a uniform and cap). This is why context and nuance are so important." Other relatives of Shirley's also said they weren't contacted by studio representatives until after the film was developed.
The film received two other awards too — Best Supporting Actor In A Motion Picture for the Drama category (which Mahershala received) and Best Film for the Comedy/Musical category.
But it was the Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody that took home the Best Film for the Drama category, beating out Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Street Could Talk and A Star Is Born. Although Rami Malek winning Best Actor for his portrayal of Mercury isn't much of a surprise, the movie winning Best Film is considering its credited director Bryan Singer. Although Singer was fired as director from the film he still received the directing credit for it.
But the win led to debate on social media, with users commenting on accusations of sexual misconduct Singer has faced throughout his career. In December 2017, Singer was accused of raping a 17-year-old, which the director denied.
Neither Malek or producer Graham King mentioned Singer in their speeches, although Singer — who wasn't in attendance for the awards ceremony — acknowledged the win on Instagram.
Still, there were some well-received wins. Regina King's win came with a standout speech centered around the Time's Up movement, where she declared that she will hire "50 percent" women for all the projects she produces over the next two years.
Notably absent from the Golden Globes winners list was Black Panther, the Ryan Coogler-directed superhero film which, although a commercial and critical success, was snubbed at this year's awards ceremony, earning none of the wins it was nominated for.
