Moved by the tragic events in Paris Friday, Yasiin Bey has spoken out on ISIS, the attacks, lobbing "a big giant Fuck Off" to the fundamentalist state that has claimed responsibility for Friday night's attacks that have left 129 dead and many more injured. Bey also dropped a previously unreleased song, entitled "NO Colonial Fiction."
The new comments about ISIS were spoken only hours after news of the attacks broke during Ferrari Sheppard's A Country Called Earth Acce Sessions. Yasiin Bey was speaking from Germany at the time, and stressed "None of this stuff is separated. Everything from Tamir Rice to Paris shootings to what's happening to the students at the University of Missouri...it's all connected. It's all the same thing."
"These's forces that are looking to just turn the world into a brutal place, and to turn people into machines," he continued. Bey went on to later fire verbal shots directly at the Islamic State. "A big giant FUCK OFF to ISIS, you don't represent nothing about Islam, or nothing about the prophet. And another giant FUCK OFF to everybody trying to say 'see, this is Islam's fault.'"
"Love must and will prevail," Yasiin went on to say. "I don't care how corny it sounds. The world has been in a state of emergency. The problem is not Islam [or] organized religion. The problem is people's lack of compassion and care for themselves and their fellow human beings. We don't treat each other well. We need to treat each other better." Listen to his full conversation with Sheppard below.
For its own sake "NO Colonial Fiction" is a somewhat breezy new track with simple, clattering drums. It's a decidedly DIY beat, but, as with so much right now, the careful contemplation of spoken words is what matters most. Listen to Yasiin Bey's newest cut below.
