Chloe x Halle Close Out Their Breakout Year By Blessing NPR's Tiny Desk
For their set, the pair perform staple tracks off of their 2020 album Ungodly Hour.
Chloe x Halle have raised the bar higher once again, this afternoon the soulful duo shared the stage on NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) concert series. Ungodly Hour, their latest album received the live treatment during this expansive set.
2020 has arguably served as a breakout year for the singers who have performed at numerous awards shows including the MTV VMAs and the BET Awards to name a few. Beyond that, the pair has appeared on the covers of both Teen Vogue and Cosmopolitan. This year has made room for Chloe x Halle to breathe life into live performances, but it’s also opened them up to a more mainstream audience. The sound they’ve cultivated has garnered loyal fans who keep exalting the sisters’ and their powerful vocals. Their set which features an all-woman band is riveting, filled with energy and an immersive experience.
Starting off on the right foot, the sisters bless us with “Don’t Make It Harder On Me.” This track was a sneaky standout on Ungodly Hour. The chemistry between the pair is evident in this rendition of the romantically charged deep cut. Naturally “Baby Girl” is next, this song which was the third track on their newest release touches on the uncertainty of life. Both Chloe and Halle appear to be in their element as they recant this track which is an anthem for women throughout the globe.
“Do It (Remix)” arrives next and there’s no surprise here mainly due to the fact that the original track was their biggest single of the year. Before they jump into it Halle declares this is one of her favorites. What follows is an energy-filled rendition of the track, the band adds a nice touch too. By the time the pair gets to “Ungodly Hour,” the vibe is already set. Chloe mentions here that the chorus always makes her happy. This song features excellent neo-soul vibes that come from the violinist and cellist masterfully performing alongside the singers. The vocals served up during this title track are heavenly.
To wrap the set, Chloe and Halle perform “Wonder What She Thinks Of Me,” a song they preface by explaining it’s about the alternate perspective of a woman outside of a relationship. The harmonies here are effortless for the talented duo. This was a strong selection to end their performance.
