DJ Premier has released the first new Gang Starr song since The Ownerz album in 2003. The song is called "Family and Loyalty" and it features posthumous verses from Guru as well as an appearance from J. Cole.

In a press release, DJ Premier talked about the importance of the track:
This record means so much to me. Its a continuation of what I never wanted to end...Its a very foreign place for me and very emotional. I get happy, sad, excited; my feelings are kind of all over the place. But predominantly, just very happy to be making music with Guru again.

He also talked about why he recruited J. Cole for the single.
When it comes to this generation of emcees, ones that are lyrically on the level that Guru was on and someone that he would want to work with; Cole is that guy...When Cole heard the record he got the chills and knew it was a classic.
