Mixtape Monday: New Dam-Funk x Knxwledge x J Rocc, DJ Center Live At The 'Black Messiah' Release Party + More!
We going (going) back (back) to mixtapes. Yes it's time once more for your favorite internet roundup of the best damn sounds on the planet--Mixtape Monday is in full effect and we've got a very fine crop of music ready for your week's enjoyment. Lead-off hitting is the latest Beat Junkies Radio mega show, which features guest sets from Dam-Funk, Knxwledge and just about every other Stones Throw selector. Just beyond that madness we've got a rare live recording of DJ Center's Black Messiah release party set, which hits all the necessary funkified bases for D'Angelo fans. Furthermore we're repping an all-new mix of eerie tracks inspired by the work of horror master John Carpenter, brand new Kaytranada, plus Jamie XX and Four Tet chopping it up in tandem. The roundup is live and as strong as ever; Mixtape Monday hit your head so hard your hat won't fit.
Avid Okayplayers will know that this is a mighty big exception we're making. Usually we stray away from including radio shows, but with Dam-Funk, Knxwledge, DJ Babu, Rhettmatic, and J Rocc all stopping by to either talk shop or drop rocks, we knew it'd be a sin not to include the latest Beat Junkies RadioSoundcheck episode and give it pole position. With multiple on-the-fly mixes being crafted on air, the Junkies truly upped the bar for hip-hop radio, online or otherwise. Be sure to catch Knxwledge dropping info on his To Pimp A Butterfly track "Momma," Dam-Funk spinning choice 45s, and the ever-unsung hero J Rocc's subtle, genius work in the second half.
Be sure to tune in to future Soundcheck episodes on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month, over at Dash Radio.

Hard to believe it's been over three months since D'Angelo's monumental Black Messiah made its way into the world, but here we are, living in the post-"Sugah Daddy" era. DJ Center recently uploaded his live mix from the BM release party hosted by Rubber Tracks in Brooklyn. Center's all-wax set of D'Angelo-inspired tunes includes too many R&B greats to list (all we can say is get ready for heavy doses of Sly, Ike & Tina...) and his eclectic, groove-bending choices totally capture the sprawling feel of the record itself. Put it on and enjoy. You can catch more of Center's work over at PushTheFader.
The temperature in here just rose ten degrees. Belgium-based DJ and producer Max Le Daron hit a home run with his "It's An Afrobeat Ting" mixtape, a set that's deceptively modern, despite its name. Full of current club heaters from Kwamz & Flava, Skales and Yemi Alade (not to mention a brand new piece from Le Daron himself), the hour-long mix is a sonic trek through Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire and more. Our family at Okayafrica featured it late last week, and you can read a bit more about both Le Daron and the vibrant state of modern African beats right here.

ICYMI, NYC music outpost and Okayplayer favorite hang Turntable Lab runs its own radio show, and regularly brings through some of the best DJs in the business. Their most recent session featured Monk Uno who dropped a live set of nothing but choice grooves, from the drum machine funk of Superstructure to an ace flip of D-Train's "Trying to Get Over" (a cut we will never, ever, ever get enough of). A little bit disco, a little bit hip-hop, and in every way dancefloor friendly, Uno's TTL set will set the mood like it's 1986 again and you just got yourself paid.
Check out more of Monk's work over at his label, Names You Can Trust.

With all the (deserved) hubbub over Flying Lotus's Kendrick Lamar-toting BBC Radio 1 show last week, Kaytranada's work got left out of the spotlight. And that's a shame, because the young producer-DJ savant threw down an absolutely first class hour of music, including cuts from Madlib, Odd Futurians The Internet, Stevie Wonder, Todd Terje and OKP favorites Pharrell & The Yessirs (wonder who they could be...). Kaytra made sure to include plenty of his own material as well, including his flip of D'Angelo's "Really Love" and a so-stupid-its-ingenious chop of Hilary Duff's "Come Clean." As with everything else he does, Kaytranada's work here has to be heard to be believed, so get to getting and enjoy this hour of brilliant work.

Over at LargeUp there's a party going on, and Willy Chin is grooving at its helm. The Miami remix master threw down a monstrous new volume of his "Uh Gosh" mixtape series, one that comes loaded with a just-right blend of old school island vibes and newer stlyistics. It's a little bit Soca, a little bit hip-hop and a tad EDM, but if it's good enough for the wise minds at LargeUp it's damn sure worthy of our time. You can read a little more about the mix and check out plenty more fine sounds right over here.
This is exactly the kind of mixtape we love to highlight in this here roundup. Curated by the folks at Retro Promenade, this here is a mix of new, all-original material inspired by the film works of thriller auteur John Carpenter. Carpenter, of course, wrote many of his own scores and developed a sort of woozy, synth-drenched aesthetic that added an extra element of dread to works like Halloween and They Live. It's a style that's gone on to heavily influence composers and musicians alike and now with Retro Promenade's new set we can even enjoy more creepy tones. From the opening blaze of Lazerhawk's "Escape From Germany" to the apropos haze of Fixions' "Fogs," the new set is, truthfully, more of album than mixtape, but is such a creative tribute to Carpenter's unique style that we're more than happy to give it some shine. Avid fans of the album can purchase it right here.

We've always wanted a heated pool, and so now here we are. LA DJ duo Pools (aka Morse Code and Thee Mike B) has thrown down a wildly creative mix that draws from international rhythms and local funk in all those just-right ways, putting on a set that's just as bucolic and luxurious as real life heated pools. The 67 minute mix often veers into heavy house territory, but has enough gritty bass and glossy keyboard chords to keep any soul or hip-hop head quite happy. This could be the ideal soundtrack to the best summer party you've ever had, so keep it in your back pocket for a slow and hot summer sunset. We won't blow your cover.
Yes we already showed DJ QBert love in last week's Mixtape Monday. No we will not apologize for doing so this week. The expert turntablist has once again wowed us, this time with hsi brand new Demolition Pumpkin set/album, which blends some of our most beloved rock favorites into the sort of funk and boogie that he's best known for utilizing. James Brown, Rush, The Brothers Johnson (yes please) and Lonnie Liston Smith all sit comfortably beside one another, bathed in the flowing brilliant of QBert's skilled hands and inspired mind. The entire thing has made its way to Youtube, so get your grooves on in every which way below.
