9th Wonder Mentee Reuben Vincent Pay Homage to 'Belly' in "Expedition" Video [Premiere]
Reuben Vincent drops the latest video from his Boy Meets World EP.
When Reuben Vincent was 13, he released his debut mixtape IDOL.ESCENT. Somehow the project, which was released in 2014, got on the radar of famed producer 9th Wonder.
The rest is history. 9th would take notice of the rapper, who is from Charlotte, North Carolina. And 9th would become sort of a mentor for Reuben. In 2016, Reuben would sign to 9th Wonder's Jamla label and release another mixtape, called Myers Park.
Last month Reuben took the next step by releasing his stellar Boy Meets World EP, which was executive produced by 9th Wonder. One of the more electrifying tracks on the EP is "Expedition," which features a verse from labelmate GQ and production from Grammy-nominee Eric G.
We are premiering the visuals for the song, which features a clever homage to the 1998 cult classic Belly. In fact, the scene they recreate is one featuring drug kingpin Rico eating a banana.
Speaking about the making of the song, Reuben said
"The creation of “Expedition” was a fun experience since the producer, Eric G, and I were intentional of every detail of the beat before any words were even laid. The intentionality of this song is to shine on my upbringing in the South. GQ’s feature on this song came from me writing to the beat at his house and he then showed me how he could add additional energy to the song that I felt was needed."
As for the video, Reuben said it "was about having a fun time, and I hope all the viewers can feel that transparency as well."
