'The Boondocks' Reboot Has Been Canceled

The Boondocks star Cedric Yarbrough revealed that Sony Pictures Television has "pulled the plug" on the reboot.

For those who were hoping the long-awaited Boondocks reboot had just stalled but was still being worked on for a 2022 release, well — hate to break it you but it's no longer happening.

In a report from comicbook.com, Cedric Yarbrough (the voice behind Tom DuBois) revealed in an interview with 1-on-1 w/Deuces that Sony Pictures Television has "pulled the plug" on the reboot.

"I hate to say this, but… The show is, right now, not coming back," Yarbrough said. "I don't know if this is breaking news, but we've been wanting to do the show. And Sony… they decided they're going to pull the plug. So, I don't know. Hopefully, maybe one day we'll be able to revisit. If we don't then that's what that is. But, I wish the show was coming back."

A spokesperson for Sony Pictures Television confirmed the cancelation, telling Okayplayer via email: "the series will not be moving forward at HBO Max."

Back in 2019, it was announced that Sony Pictures Animation was reviving The Boondocks. The reboot was reportedly going to be a reimagining of the original, focused on “the battles of the Freeman family against the evil local government tyrant Uncle Ruckus, who rules fictional Woodcrest County Maryland, with an iron fist.”

“There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today,” show creator Aaron McGruder said previously. “It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.”

After being announced, the series was supposed to make its debut with a 50-minute special on HBO Max back in fall 2020, but that never happened.
