Chadwick Boseman's Brother Wants T'Challa to Be Recast

Ahead of Black Panther sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Chadwick Boseman's brother Derrick gave his approval for T'Challa to be recast.

Derrick Boseman, the brother of Chadwick Boseman, shared with TMZ that he thinks that T'Challa, aka Black Panther, should be recasted.

Derrick said that T'Challa “needs to live on in the Black Panther franchise,” adding that he is a positive influence to a new generation of Black Panther viewers. Revealing that Chadwick “knew the power of the character and the positive influence it carries,” Derrick said that Chadwick knew T'Challa's impact would be bigger than just himself. He also added that he would want the character to be recasted.

He's not the only person who feels like this. There is a viral petition for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to recast T'Challa. In the Change.org petition, the mission, which uses the hashtag #RecastTchalla, includes a statement to preserve the character's legacy:

"#RecastTChalla is not a call to replace Chadwick Boseman. (No one could ever do that.) It is not asking for an immediate replacement either. Nor is this calling for the prevention of other characters to take up the mantle of Black Panther like Shuri or anyone else. This petition is merely asking to continue the portrayal of T’Challa in the MCU. #RecastTChalla is a call to fulfill the role that Chadwick Boseman worked so hard for the world to see."

Since Chadwick's death, discussions have swirled regarding if T'Challa should be recast or if younger sister, Shuri should claim the throne. Making an appearance on podcast Ringer-Verse last month, Nate Moore, MCU VP of Development reaffirmed that the Black Panther film series had no plans of recasting T'Challa.

"You will not see T’Challa in the MCU 616 universe, we couldn’t do it," Moore said. "I will say when Chad passed, it was a real conversation we had with [Ryan] Coogler about what do we do.”

Confirming that the discussion with Coogler was "a fast conversation" and that it took "minutes" to proceed with the future of the Black Panther franchise, Moore added that the film will proceed with T'Challa amiss:

“The challenge for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is telling a story without T’Challa, and I think it’s a challenge we’re up for and obviously we’re in the middle of it, and we’re figuring it out and so far I think what we’re getting is great.”
