Dave Chappelle is Returning to Netflix With New Series, ‘Home Team’
Chappelle's Home Team will feature four veteran comedians selected by Dave Chappelle himself
Even throughout it all, Netflix is still in the Dave Chappelle business.
On Friday, Netflix announced a new comedy special called Chappelle's Home Team. The series, which is executive produced by the comedy legend, will feature four stand alone comedy specials from comedians chosen by Chappelle himself. In each special, Chappelle will introduce the comedian. What makes this pretty cool is that all the comedians chosen are veterans, spending more than 30 years in comedy.
The first one, which will be directed by Emmy and Grammy award winner Stan Lathan, will premiere on February 28th and will star DC's Earthquake. The episode after will feature a Chappelle's Show vet, Donnell Rawlings. The date for that episode has not yet been announced.
In a statement, Chappelle said:
"I've been doing this a long time and comedians like Quake and Donnell are not only friends but have inspired my own career. Anyone in the comedy community knows these names and knows their time to shine is long overdue. I am proud to be a part of this moment.”
Even after the controversy around The Closer and material that people have deemed transphobic, Netflix is still continuing to do multiple projects with Chappelle. During the height of the controversy, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said.
“We don’t allow titles Netflix that are designed to incite hate or violence, and we don’t believe The Closer crosses that line. I recognize, however, that distinguishing between commentary and harm is hard, especially with stand-up comedy which exists to push boundaries. Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean-spirited but our members enjoy it, and it’s an important part of our content offering.”
Late last year, Netflix announced that Chappelle would be featured in their inaugural comedy megafestNetflix Is A Joke: The Festival.
