Watch the Trailer to Upcoming DC Feature ‘Blue Beetle’
On Monday, DC Studios unveiled the trailer to their first Latino-led superhero epic, Blue Beetle.
DC Studios is diversifying its films with the upcoming action flick Blue Beetle. On Monday (April 3), the movie company unveiled a trailer for Blue Beetle, which stars Xolo Maridueña as the titular hero (aka Jaime Reyes). Previously, the film was slated for an HBO Max release but was extended to a theatrical run, unlike the scrapped Batgirl which also had Latino representation.
Rounding out the cast is George Lopez, Susan Sarandon, Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Belissa Escobedo, and Harvey Guillén. Directed by Mexican filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings), a portion of the language in Blue Beetle will be in Spanish, although it’s not prominently featured in the trailer.
“One of the things that we really wanted to do with the cast was to be able to be as authentic as we can,” Soto recently said during a trailer launch Q&A. “We wanted to tap into almost three generations. We wanted to see the first immigrant family,” Soto explained. “Not the Hallmark cookie-cutter Latinos. Something that feels like, ‘Yeah. That's my uncle. I can totally relate to those [characters].’”
Here’s the Blue Beetle premise: Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.
Blue Beetle was introduced in the Infinite Crisis series in the mid-2000s, receiving its superhuman powers from a mystical scarab.
The movie comes to theaters on August 18. Watch the trailer below.
