The Trailer for 'Dear Mama' Shows the Powerful Relationship Between 2Pac & Afeni Shakur
2Pac and Afeni Shakur-focused FX docuseries Dear Mama premieres on April 21. The five-part event is directed by Allen Hughes.
2Pac and Afeni Shakur five-part docuseries Dear Mama has an official trailer. After being teased last year, a two-minute clip was released on Wednesday (March 22), with archival footage of the mother and son discussing their relationship and political ties.
“My mother taught me to analyze society and not be quiet,” he says in the clip during a 1988 interview. “If there’s something on my mind, speak it. Because – I gotta reiterate it – my mother was a Black Panther and she was very involved in the movement.”
Audio from Afeni Shakur echoes her son's statement: “It was very difficult for me to be a mom, but I knew very well how to protect my children,” she says.
During the Winter Critics Press Tour in February, Dear Mama director Allen Hughes shared more about the upcoming FX show.
“Wherever possible, we tried to find archival footage that hadn’t been seen so there’s a lot that we have in the five parts,” he explained. “There’s also audio that’s never been heard. And not just some of his acapellas and vocals, there is a lot of stuff of 2Pac from his baby years that had never been seen.”
“For 2Pac superfans, I believe that two of the most important things in the project is the never seen before [footage],” Hughes continued. “But most importantly, you get to understand why he made certain decisions.”
Dear Mama is scheduled for a two-episode premiere on April 21, with the remaining three episodes releasing each Friday. The show will also be available on Hulu the following day.
