Questlove, DJ Jazzy Jeff, A-Trak and More Pay Their Respects to DJ Spinbad
World-renowned DJ Spinbad died at the age of 46.
On Tuesday, New York City underground icon DJ Spinbad died at the age of 46. Over the years, Spinbad made early appearances on the syndicated Live in tha Den With Big Tigger, as well as the city's stations WWPR and WHTZ. In addition to touring with artists like Moby, the Queens native toured with Canadian comedian Russell Peters, who--along with many of Spinbad's peers--shared the news with a heartfelt Instagram post.
"This is a post I had hoped I'd never have to make," Peters wrote, "but it's with a broken heart that I have to say bye to my brother, my friend, my DJ, one of the most creative and brilliant minds I've ever known."
For about eight years, Spinbad toured with Peters, serving as his official DJ for his stand-up specials.
Spinbad also released a series of mixtapes and two official albums of his own: Underground Airplay in 2001 and FabricLive.14 in 2004. A-Trak offered some insight into Spinbad's impact in a post.
"The level of artistry that he put into his mixtapes... he sent everyone back to school," he wrote on Instagram. "Those 80s Mega Mix tapes changed the game, straight up. He put his mark in the history books. Always such a nice humble dude too. This is too sad. Sending love to his family and close ones."
"This one hurts bad," DJ Jazzy Jeff wrote. "My friend and amazing DJ...may you rest well next to your mother. We lost a great one!"
