Flying Lotus Apologizes For Defending The Gaslamp Killer Against Rape Allegations

Afropunk 2016: George Clinton, Flying Lotus, More Deliver On Day 1

Flying Lotus has issued an apology for recent remarks he made defending The Gaslamp Killer, who has been accused of rape.

"I wanted to sincerely apologize for my comments at my show. I realize they were insensitive," Lotus said in an interview with HipHopDX. "This is a tough time for all of us, men and women. I'm having trouble finding my voice in all of this. I am truly heartbroken. My stage has always been a place for what's in my heart until now. I feel as internet-wielding people we have to learn to give each other space to feel, to honor each other's reactions and experiences without bullying. I care about this community and its impact so much."

Lotus also added that the video circulating online is only a portion of his speech, saying that he came "from a humble place" with it.

During a recent performance at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the Brainfeeder label founder played one of Gaslamp’s tracks to finish off his set before addressing the crowd: "The internet is a f**kin' liar. Ain't nobody judge and jury but the f**kin' law, okay?…Thank you guys so much for coming, let truth and justice have its day."

Last week Gaslamp, real name William Bensussen, was accused of drugging and raping a woman named Chelsea Elaynne, along with her friend RaeAn, in 2013.

"The Gaslamp Killer drugged my best friend and myself at a party at the Standard Hotel, had non-consensual sex with both of us while we were completely incapacitated, and then dumped us back in front of the standard after it happened," read her statement.

Following Elaynne's statement, Gaslamp responded via Twitter where he denied the allegations and said he would "never hurt or endanger a woman."

Brainfeeder also issued a statement on the matter claiming it "did not have any knowledge of the alleged incidents, and condemn any such actions across the board." The label also emphasized that it has not released any of Gaslamp's music in over five years and that the producer is not currently signed to Brainfeeder.
