Golden Globes 2022: Mahershala Ali, Will Smith & Denzel Washington Will Battle it Out For Best Actor
The 2022 Golden Globes were just announced. The most exciting race will feature Mahershala Ali, Will Smith, and Denzel Washington facing off.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced nominations for the 2022 Golden Globes on Monday (December 13th).
Held at The Beverly Hills Hotel, the livestream event was presided over by new HFPA president Helen Hoehne and surprise guest Snoop Dogg who both read the nominations. According to CNN, multiple media partners of the Golden Globes have opted not to participate in the 2022 ceremony, with concerns surrounding membership. In a separate report by the Los Angeles Times, it was exposed that HFPA had zero Black members.
On the Golden Globes website, in February, HFPA shared their commitment for the organization to have a more Black-inclusive future:
"We are fully committed to ensuring our membership is reflective of the communities around the world who love film, tv and the artists inspiring and educating them. We understand that we need to bring in Black members, as well as members from other underrepresented backgrounds, and we will immediately work to implement an action plan to achieve these goals as soon as possible."
Although NBC has decided not to air the 2022 Golden Globes ceremony — which will be held on January 9th — HFPA claims to have made strides in improving their efforts to be a more diverse and inclusive organization. In a People article, the publication revealed that HFPA faced boycotts throughout Hollywood, some including Tom Cruise and Scarlett Johansson.
For the nominations, the big winners were The Power of the Dog and Belfast, which both earned seven film nominations. On the TV side, Succession — which just wrapped its third season — earned the most TV nominations, gathering five. Popular Apple shows like Ted Lasso and The Morning Show got four nominations.
The most exciting race of the year comes in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture category, where Mahershala Ali(Swan Song), Will Smith (King Richard), and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth) will face off for the award. (Ali and Washington won Golden Globes before; Smith has not.) In her third Golden Globes season, Issa Rae is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy while Beyoncé has received her fourth Golden Globes nomination in Best Original Song – Film for her performance of "Be Alive" from King Richard. Hit Netflix series Squid Game has also received a nomination for Best Television Series Drama.
