Dave Chappelle Narrates the Trailer for J. Period's Debut Album 'Story to Tell'
J. Period revealed his debut album will feature guest appearances from Jemele Hill, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Black Thought, and many more.
On Monday Brooklyn producer J.Period announced the release date for his debut album Story to Tell. The announcement came with an animated album trailer narrated by one of the album's high-profile guests: Grammy-winning comedian Dave Chappelle. Watch the first trailer below.
The project will be split into three acts. The first chapter will arrive this Friday, April 30th. Expect appearances from Black Thought, Chappelle, Jemele Hill, Bobbito Garcia, and more.
"Story to Tell envisions a vibrant world of connections," the trailer's description reads. "Between artists, songs, stories, genres, cultures, and generations: a web of creative impulses that flows like a mixtape, and bangs like a blockbuster. It's a new kind of musical storybook, and an eye-popping, ear-opening ride."
The album is a new step in J. Period's quietly prolific career. The Brooklyn-bred producer has worked with names like Q-Tip, The Roots, and Nas, scored video game soundtracks, and even serves as the Brooklyn Nets' music supervisor. J.Period also earned a Billboard number-one record with Miranda for The Hamilton Mixtape.
"For my debut album, I wanted to push the envelope and carry that tradition forward, and I am honored to have one of the world’s premiere storytellers, Dave Chappelle, as the voice of our Story to Tell. Dave discovered me through the stories I've told on my mixtapes," J. Period told Complex earlier this month. "We share a true love for hip-hop culture, so I can't imagine a better narrator for the next phase of my musical journey."
A few weeks ago, J. Period released the album's first single "All in Your Head," featuring Dave Chappelle, Black Thought, and Tiffany Gouche. The track appears in the Story to Tell album trailer.
