Jason Mitchell Will Play Sean Bell in an Upcoming Biopic

Jason Mitchell previously played Eazy E in Straight Outta Compton.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Straight Outta Compton star Jason Mitchell has landed another big role. Mitchell will reportedly play slain Queens man Sean Bell in the upcoming biopic titled 50 Shots.

"I'd to give thanks to God," Mitchell wrote on Instagram Thursday, "the Bell family and my guy @truvisionfilms. This is about to be epic."

Sean Bell was shot dead at the age of 23 in Jamaica, Queens on the eve of his wedding in November 2006. Officers suspected Bell and his two friends were armed. Four years after his death, the city of New York settled with Bell's family in a $7 million lawsuit. However, three of the five detectives involved were found not guilty of first- and second-degree manslaughter, assault, and second-degree reckless endangerment charges.

The movie has been in development for three years, and will be shot on location in Queens. Mitchell originally read for the role of one of the undercover policemen on the scene, but immediately asked to play Sean in order to help tell his story. According to Urban Hollywood411, Mitchell will also serve as executive producer of the film with Tru of TruVision Films.

Sean's father William is in favor of the choice. According to TMZ, he's spoken with Mitchell nearly every day since the decision.

Mitchell will also appear in the upcoming film Zola, inspired by a Twitter thread from 2015. Since the 33-year old broke out in Straight Outta Compton, he's appeared in the 2017 film Mudbound. Last year, however, Mitchell was terminated from his role on the Showtime series The Chi amidst multiple behavioral misconduct accusations from former co-star Tiffany Boone. Authentic Talent & Literary Management, as well as the United Talent Agency promptly severed ties with Mitchell.

Mitchell later denied the accusations in an interview with The Breakfast Club.
