The rally takes place at local HBCU Allen University.

The Democratic primaries are heating up, and candidates are pulling out all the stops. On Friday night, Tom Steyer will host a rally with a couple of big names. DJ Jazzy Jeff and Juvenile, as well as Yolanda Adams, will perform at Allen University's John Hurst Adams Gymnasium. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Steyer has spent millions of dollars on campaign advertisements in South Carolina. The venue and choice of guests for this upcoming rally is evidence of Steyer's attempts to secure the Black vote. At this week's debate in Charleston, Steyer declared his willingness to grant reparations to descendants of slavery in America.

According to the most recent American Community Survey, nearly 27 percent of South Carolina's population identifies as African-American. According to the Free Times Post and Courier, 60 percent of South Carolina's Democratic electorate is Black.

While Steyer isn't the favorite by any metric, his rise in the Palmetto State could shake up the margins at the top of the race.

A recent Change Research poll has projected Steyer to come in third in the upcoming primary with 20 percent of voters. Joe Biden, who held a 31-point projected advantage (46 percent) over Sanders in May 2019, is now tied with him at 23 percent in the same poll.

The South Carolina Democratic primary begins Saturday, February 29.
