Kanye West Demands "Final Edit And Approval" Of 'Jeen-Yuhs' Documentary
Kanye West took to Instagram to demand creative control of the film's final edit before it releases on Netflix next month.
The party isn't over until Ye has the final say. Ahead of jeen-yuhs' release on Netflix next month (and premiere at Sundance next week), the artist formerly known as Kanye West took to Instagram to share his grievances about the film.
"I’m going to say this kindly for the last time. I must get final edit and approval on this doc before it releases on Netflix," West wrote. "Open the edit room immediately so I can be in charge of my own image. Thank you in advance."
Directed by longtime West collaborators Coodie Simmons and Chike Ozah, jeen-yuhs is a three-part documentary that explores over 20 years of West's career. Known as Coodie & Chike, the directors spoke with Variety about having the final cut of jeen-yuhs, and West being controlling about his image.
"I said, 'Dude, you have to trust me.' And he did, 100%," Simmons said. "Mind you, when his team and the business-people have gotten involved, they're of course going to have their say. But I needed to tell this story. It's not about making Kanye likable or not. The footage doesn't lie. What makes the film special is that it's not something definitive; it's his journey through my vision."
jeen-yuhs will premiere at Sundance next week before streaming on Netflix on February 16. Tickets for Act I of the film will also release in local theaters nationwide before its Netflix drop.
