Kevin Liles Teases A Potential New Def Jam Vendetta Video Game
Former Def Jam president Kevin Liles is apparently gauging fans' interest in a new game.
Back in 2003, EA Sports BIG released the groundbreaking video game Def Jam Vendetta. The game featured a dozen rappers and DJs, including DMX, Method Man, Redman and Ghostface Killah. The title sold over 750,000 copies in the United States, leading to two sequels. The game is widely beloved by the hip-hop community. On Wednesday, former Def Jam president Kevin Liles logged onto Twitter and Instagram to see if fans would be interested in the game making a comeback.
"#ItsInTheName," he wrote. "Thinking I should bring back the series? How many of y'all would like to see this happen? Let me know."
Most of the responses to Liles' tweet were positive. However, some fans acknowledged that there are so many stars spread between record labels that it may be tough to get past licensing issues. When he spoke with Okayplayer in 2018, Liles spoke about the game's impact.
"People used to say rap was a fad and it wasn't gonna last," he said. "Now we sit here and we're the number-one music genre in the world. It wasn't like that 15 years ago. It's been told to me it's one of the historical moments in our culture. It wasn't about one city or one group of people--this is about hip-hop culture. This was something that involved so many moving parts. Every single thing in the game was hip-hop. Every single thing. That’s why I’ll always call it the first game of its kind."
Stay tuned for further updates on a new chapter in the Def Jam Vendetta series.
