'Law & Order: SVU' Aired an Episode Centered Around Drill Music & It's Hilarious
On the latest episode of Law & Order: SVU, Ice-T's character, Odafin Tutuola, gives a quick history lesson on Chicago drill.
The very popular crime show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has a long history of taking real crime situations and turning those cases into episodic TV.
On this week's episode of Law & Order: SVU, Ice-T, Mariska Hargitay, and the crew took a crack at addressing gangsta rap. In an episode hilariously titled "Nightmares in Drill City," Odafin Tutuola (Ice-T) is investigating a triple homicide. The main suspect is a Brooklyn rapper named Gutta, who happens to make drill music. Gutta makes the mistake of incriminating himself on wax and in music videos (something that happens often in real life.)
This leads to a hilarious scenario where Tutuola — aka Ice-T, the man who literally helped create gangsta music — has to explain drill music to his co-workers.
While watching one of Gutta's music videos, Ice-T gives a quick drill history that Fake Shore Drive would be proud of:
“The music’s called drill. It’s made famous by Chief Keef out of Chicago. It spread everywhere. It’s like a competition on whose crew is the hardest.”
(Interestingly enough, Tutuola doesn't mention Brooklyn drill, despite the fact that Gutta is from Brooklyn.)
While watching the clip, Gutta drops another video where he is holding a victims chain, while admitting to the crime. Tutuola responses with the instantly quotable
“These kids are clout chasing... They’re so stupid they’re doing our jobs for us!”
The scene, of course, made its way to Twitter. And there was obviously jokes for days.
