Although Scott Storch was deemed winner against Mannie Fresh in their recent beat battle, Fresh believes that he was the true winner.
While speaking with The Breakfast Club, the producer made his case for why he was the winner of the battle against Storch, while also calling for clearer rules for future battles.
"If it's hip-hop then it's gotta be hip-hop...I was told it was a hip-hop beat battle, I didn't know it was an R&B beat battle," Fresh said. "I thought it was my catalog against his catalog."
The latter part of Fresh's comment was in reference to Storch playing tracks that he didn't fully produce, but either co-produced or provided dditional production to. Such was the case with "Still D.R.E.," which Storch dropped despite the song being produced by him, Mel-Man, and Dr. Dre.
During the battle, "Still D.R.E." was paired up against Fresh's "Back That Azz Up," which ended in a draw. In response to that, the producer said: "I could have lost 19 times out of the 20, but when you play 'Back That Azz Up' and you do a draw on that song? I'm just like, 'Oh, man.'"
At one point, Breakfast Club co-host Angela Yee asked Fresh if he won the beat battle, to which he replied, "Yeah, hell yeah."
"Some of these songs — let's just address it — you didn't do," Fresh said. "I stuck to the rules of these are songs Mannie Fresh produced...I played my songs."
However, there's no ill will between Fresh and Storch, with the former saying he called the latter following the battle.
The next beat battle coming up is DJ Premier against RZA.
