Mike Tyson Calls for a Hulu Boycott After Streamer Announces 'Iron Mike' Biopic Series
The former boxing champ claims the newly announced series has not been authorized by him or his team.
Mike Tyson is squaring up with Hulu over a biopic treatment of his life.
According to Deadline, the streamer has ordered an eight-episode series centered on the former boxing champ's origin story. The series is fittingly titled, Iron Mike, with Steven Rogers slated to write the script, Craig Gillespie in the director's seat, and Margot Robbie serving as an executive producer on the project.
However, the actual Iron Mike doesn't appear to be onboard for the small screen adaptation of his origin story. On Instagram, Tyson railed against the streamer, claiming the series was not authorized by him or his team. "Hulu's announcement to do an unauthorized mini-series of the Tyson story without compensation, although unfortunate, isn't surprising." Tyson wrote before calling for a boycott of the streamer. He went on to describe the announcement as "tone deaf" and as an example of "corporate greed," alleging the series order was conveniently unveiled during Black History Month without an actual commitment to telling and respecting Black stories. Tyson went on to imply that he was developing his own biopic series to rival Hulu's show and that an official announcement would be arriving "in coming days."
Tyson's grievance echoes some of the sentiments expressed in Dave Chappelle's recent stand-off with streamers. Earlier this year, the comedian asked fans not to watch Chappelle's Show on Netflix or HBO Max until he was cut a proper check for his iconic sketch show. In response to his request, Netflix immediately pulled the show from their catalog. And it wasn't until the comedian announced he'd actually been paid for the rights to his show that it returned to the streamer. Suppose we'll have to see if Tyson is able to orchestrate his own revolt.
