The 1968 zombie classic Night of the Living Dead is getting a sequel. An expansion of the original film directed by George Romero, Sierra Leonean filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny, Suicide by Sunlight) will direct the upcoming film, while LaToya Morgan of The Walking Dead is writing the script.
Released in October 1968, the original Night of the Living Dead centers a group who takes cover in an abandoned house in Pennsylvania during a zombie apocalypse. The film starred the late Duane Jones in a rare position as a Black actor to film amongst white players during the 1960s. Jones went on to star in other horror films including 1973's Ganja and Hess and 1986 film Vampires before his death in 1988.
“The original version of ‘Night of the Living Dead’ is still so resonant to this day,” Jusu said in a statement. “Every era has the zombie that it needs and right now, zombies reflect the ways that humans treat each other and show us who is truly the monster.”
“’Night of the Living Dead’ is one of the great cornerstones of the horror genre. I’m beyond thrilled to be playing in the sandbox that George Romero built and ecstatic to raise the stakes and push the envelope with this exciting new story,” Morgan added.
Jusu directed independent horror film Nanny, which stars Anna Diop, Michelle Monaghan, Sinqua Walls and Morgan Spector. The film debuted at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival in January and will make its limited theatrical premiere next month, followed by a release on Prime Video in December.
