President Joe Biden Vows Crackdown on Concert Ticket Surcharges
During his State of the Union Address, President Joe Biden discussed combatting high concert ticket prices, hidden airline fees and more.
President Joe Biden plans to crackdown on hefty fees that are affecting Americans. During his State of the Union Address on Tuesday night (February 7), Biden brought up 'junk fees' that are impacting citizens, from concert tickets to expensive flights.
“Junk fees may not matter to the very wealthy, but they matter to most folks in homes like the one I grew up in. They add up to hundreds of dollars a month,” Biden said during his speech. “They make it harder for you to pay the bills or afford that family trip.”
Elsewhere, Biden proposed to cap junk fees, making all fees transparent through companies.
“The idea that cable internet and cellphone companies can charge you $200 or more if you decide to switch to another provider — give me a break,” Biden said. “We can stop service fees on tickets to concerts and sporting events and make companies disclose all fees upfront.”
The White House defines junk fees as “designed either to confuse or deceive consumers or to take advantage of lock-in or other forms of situational market power.” It does not include “reasonable add-on fees for additional products or services,” like upgrading to VIP seating.
Biden's speech is good news for those purchasing Beyoncé tickets on Ticketmaster. Last week, TheThe Senate Judiciary Committee tweeted a warning to Ticketmaster to avoid another disaster similar to Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour. The rollout for Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour has since began, with purchasers being divided into three groups with various registration deadlines and presale dates.
