50 Cent to Produce New Starz Series About Snoop Dogg's Murder Acquittal
Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent ready upcoming drama series Murder Was the Case as part of Starz' hip-hop anthology.
The Dogg will finally get his due. Snoop Dogg will team up with 50 Centfor a new Starz hip-hop anthology series called A Moment in Time. The upcoming series will center around Snoop Dogg's 1993 single "Murder Was the Case" and his adjoining murder trial, in which he was acquitted in 1996.
Deadline reports that Starz is currently searching for a show writer. A Moment in Time: Murder Was the Case will be based upon how Snoop Dogg was charged for murder in 1993 after the shooting of rival gang member Philip Woldermariam. The perpetrator of the killing was discovered to be Snoop's former bodyguard McKinley Lee.
The trial occurred during the release of his 1993 debut album Doggystyle which achieved critical acclaim. The single "Murder Was the Case" was accused of incriminating the rapper for its violent content. Snoop Dogg was represented by defense attorney Johnnie Cochran – who also represented OJ Simpson during his murder trial in 1995 – and the rapper was acquitted and departed his former label Death Row Records in 1998.
50 Cent will executive produce the series through his G-Unit Film & Television alongside executive producers Snoop Dogg, his wife and manager Shante Broadus and Sara Ramaker through Snoopadelic Films. Anthony Wilson will also serve as an executive producer on the series from Lionsgate Television.
“I am excited to finally tell the story of 'Murder was the Case,'" Snoop Dogg saaid. "This was a pivotal moment in my life and career and I’ve deliberately waited until I found the right partner to bring this to the screen. You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge.”
“'Murder was the Case' is an incredible story," 50 Cent said. "Snoop had the biggest album in the country and was fighting for his freedom in the courtroom. The only place to go on this incredible ride is with G-Unit Film & Television. I’m excited to be working with Snoop to bring it to television.”
A Moment in Time: Murder was the Case follows last year's development of A Moment in Time: The Massacre, which Variety reported that 50 Cent would serve as producer. The inaugural season of the series will focus on 50 Cent's rivalry with The Game, which spiraled into a murder-for-hire stunt and conspiracy that imprisoned music executive Jimmy Henchman.
