Viola Davis & John Boyega Go Into Battle In 'The Woman King' Trailer
The trailer for Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed epic The Woman King has released, with the film starring Viola Davis, John Boyega and othera.
Viola Davis is tapping into her warrior spirit. On Wednesday (June 6), Sony Pictures Entertainment unveiled the first trailer for upcoming historical action film The Woman King, which stars Davis as Nanisca, who also serves as general for King Ghezo’s Dahomey Amazons. With King Ghezo played by British actor and producer John Boyega, the Amazons are an all-women army who prepare to fight for their homeland Dahomey (which is present-day Benin).
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood – whose known for legendary films Love & Basketball and The Secret Life of Bees – The Woman King also stars Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Adrienne Warren and Jayme Lawson.
Set to 2019 Beyoncé song "My Power" from The Lion King: The Gift, the trailer shows Nanisca and her troops going into battle for Dahomey.
“We must fight back for our people,” Nanisca says in the trailer. “Some things are worth fighting for.”
In February, Davis teased the upcoming epic on social media.

The film is based on true events of General Nanisca and warriors who protected the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s against invading colonialists.
Here's the official synopsis:
"The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. Some things are worth fighting for..."
The Woman King hits theaters on September 16.
