Watch Killer Mike and Bernie Sanders Discuss The Plan for Progressives After Election Day
"As important as this election is, more important is, after this Election Day, we plot, plan, strategize, organize and mobilize as progressives on the ground."
Days out from the presidential election, Killer Mike and Bernie Sanders are focused on the next steps for progressives regardless of the Election Day outcome.
In a conversation presented by Rolling Stone, the longtime campaign partners discussed some of the encouraging signs heading into Tuesday, including the high turnout amongst Black voters showing up early at the polls. "I want the good guys to win, meaning the progressives that are within the party, and I want to see us stay active locally," Mike told the Vermont Senator, noting some of the promising efforts he'd seen across Atlanta.
From there, the Atlanta rapper and entrepreneur pivoted to what he felt was an obligation to pay higher taxes as a wealthy man in Atlanta, and how he sees taxes as a means of investing in communities locally and across the country. "I’d like to be a very old man knowing that in my middle age I made the right decision in terms of investing in American jobs, investing in American kids’ education, and investing in social programs such as Healthcare For All," Mike says to Sanders.
Mike goes on to discuss the need for a restorative justice approach to the ongoing push to legalize cannabis across the country via fast-tracks to employment within the cannabis industry for formerly incarcerated non-violent drug offenders. The Run The Jewels rapper also adds that he hasn't spoken with Joe Biden or any reps for the Democratic presidential candidate, but that his conversations with Kamala Harris have given him some hope. "I’m very encouraged that, as a former prosecutor, that she wishes to steer us in a more restorative justice place," Mike says of the VP candidate.
