After months of anticipation, we're finally getting our first official look at Matt Reeves' The Batman.
Premiered at DC Comics' weekend-long virtual FanDome convention, the first teaser introduces The Riddler and The Penguin as presumable main villains and offers the best glimpses yet at Robert Pattinson's younger, goth-ish Bruce Wayne, Jeffery Wright's distinguished (Commissioner) James Gordon, and Zoë Kravitz's young Catwoman. During the panel discussion for the film, Reeves mentioned Chinatown and Taxi Driver as stylistic influences for his dark detective thriller. He also noted that the film is only 25% complete, as production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing the premiere date back to a tentative October 1st, 2021 release (originally slated for June 21st, 2021.)
On the film's particular angle on a reboot of the franchise, Reeves insists his take won't be an origin story of any sort. Rather, The Batman drops viewers somewhere in the middle of Bruce Wayne's transformation. "I think for me, what was exciting, is not doing that, not doing the origin, but instead, to meet him in the middle of this criminological experiment, to see him fail and grow and be heroic but in a way that felt very human, very flawed," Reeves said during the panel.
A trailer for The Batman was just one of quite a few reveals during DC's FanDome event. There's also a new trailer for Wonder Woman: 1984, an animated teaser for The Rock's Black Adam passion project, and plenty of updates on future releases to hold you over.
