Watch the Cast of the 'Super Mario Bros.' & The Roots Sing-Along on 'The Tonight Show'

On The Tonight Show, The Roots, Keegan Michael Key, Zach Braff, Seth Rogan and more sang the Super Mario Bros. theme song.

With just one month to go before the theatrical release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a sing-along of the beloved game's theme song was brought to The Tonight Show. Along with host Jimmy Fallon and the show's house band The Roots, the film's cast members including Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, and Charlie Day joined the musical sketch. In a surprise twist, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri – with some help from the Minions – appeared towards the conclusion of The Brady Bunch-like sequence.

In an interview with Total Film, directors Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath explained the basis of the SMBM, also detailing why Pratt of Marvel Studios fame was cast.

"It's a bit of an origin tale. It's the story of Mario becoming Super Mario. At the outset Mario and his brother Luigi are plumbers in Brooklyn, blue-collar guys… from a family of Italian immigrants," Horvath said. "When you play the game, if you don’t give up, Mario will succeed. So we transferred that player experience from the game to a characteristic that [movie] Mario would have. For us, Pratt's casting made total sense. He's really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart. For the way that Mario is characterised in our film, he’s perfect for it."
