Watch the First Trailer for 'The Blackening', the Spoof That Mocks All Horror Tropes
Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, Yvonne Orji, Sinqua Walls and more star in upcoming comedy film The Blackening.
Juneteenth will never be the same after upcoming comedy horror flick The Blackening. On Wednesday (March 1) a 2-minute trailer for the Tim Story-directed film released, starring Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji. The film's screenplay and screen story is written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (The Amber Ruffin Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine).
In the trailer a group of friends reunite in a spoof-worthy cabin in the woods. As the lights go out, the group stumble upon a creepy board game jokingly dubbed “Jim Crow Monopoly.” But the voice of a sinister character on TV appears to warn the group that if they refuse to play, they'll die.
The first card chosen reads, “In your predicament, the black character is always the first to die. I will spare your lives if you sacrifice the person you deem the blackest.”
In an interview with Collider, Perkins shared that he wanted to defy the traditional tropes of Black characters in horror films.
"Being able to take these tropes and find exactly what makes them complex, what gives them depth, and then forcing that in the movie so that when you start watching it, you see what has been in horror movies before and then the goal of the movie is to constantly break down your assumptions of these characters by constantly forcing depth."
The Blackening releases June 16 via Lionsgate. Watch the full trailer below.
