De La Soul Denounces Book About Them: “We are not connected to it”
“If you choose to support this book, that’s your right,” De La Soul said.
De La Soul are not in support of a recently released book that’s centered around the beloved hip-hop group.
On Thursday, De La took to social media to denounce High and Rising: A Book About De La Soul, a new book that was released last week. Written by esteemed music journalist Marcus J. Moore, High and Rising is a “stunning cultural biography” that “tells the story of one of the most influential rap groups of all time,” while weaving in Moore’s “deeply personal coming-of-age story about his journey through life with De La as a backdrop,” according to a book synopsis.“We’ve been receiving congratulatory messages about a book titled High and Rising. However, we want to make it absolutely clear: this is an unauthorized book, and we are not connected to it in any way,” De La wrote in the social media post.
“Our story will be told in our words, in our way, with the style you’ve come to know and love… If you choose to support this book, that’s your right. We just want it to be clear that we do not and we are exploring all of our legal options,” the group added.
The post has caused some division, with some siding with De La, especially amid the lengthy battle it took for the group to regain ownership of its classic catalog, while others have disagreed, noting Moore’s credibility as a writer, and the fact that it’s not all that out of the ordinary for someone to write an “unauthorized” book about a musical act.
Prior to High and Rising, Moore wrote The Butterfly Effect: How Kendrick Lamar Ignited the Soul of Black America, which was published in 2020.
Earlier this year, De La released a documentary titled Chapter 3. It detailed the group’s reuniting with Prince Paul to remaster De La’s catalog for its release on streaming platforms last year. From Your Site Articles
