Donald Glover Collaborator Hiro Murai To Make Directorial Debut With A24
Murai was a director and executive producer of Donald Glover’s Atlanta TV series.
Donald Glover collaborator Hiro Murai is prepping to make his directorial debut — and with A24 no less.
According to Deadline, Murai will be directing an original samurai film titled Bushido, with A24 financing the film, as well as producing it alongside Square Peg and 2AM. The outlet noted that the movie, which will be written by Henry Dunham, “is said to be a high-stakes action film set against the backdrop of feudal Japan.”
Murai and Dunham will produce Bushido alongside Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen for Square Peg, and Julia Oh, Christine D’Souza Gelb and David Hinojosa for 2AM.
Murai has made quite a name for himself in Hollywood. He served as a director and executive producer of Atlanta, Donald Glover’s hit show. He has also served as an executive producer of the equally beloved TV show The Bear.
Back in 2022, Murai hinted at wanting to develop a larger project in an Interview magazine feature with Spike Jonze.
“I’m also trying to develop features and different series. I’m following whatever is exciting to me at the moment and hope that the end result works,” he said at the time. “People ask me if I want to do a movie, but I keep thinking about seeing your short with the two robots [I’m Here] in college and thinking you can use any framework to tell a story. So I guess I’ve been trying to think about being medium agnostic. As long as there’s something sparking inside of it, it doesn’t matter what it is.”
